Arguments for Salvation by Faith Alone
Justification by Faith Apart from Works
Romans 3:28 – 'For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.'
Galatians 2:16 – '...a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ.'
Ephesians 2:8–9 – 'For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.'
Philippians 3:9 – Paul desires to be found in Christ 'not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ.'
Salvation is God’s Gift, Not Earned
Faith emphasizes God’s grace and Christ’s completed work on the cross.
Human works cannot measure up to God’s holiness; thus, salvation must come as a gift (Romans 4:4–5).
Abraham as an Example
Romans 4:2–3 – Abraham was justified by faith, not works: 'Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.'
Arguments for Works as Essential in Salvation
Faith Without Works is Dead
James 2:14, 17, 24 – 'What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?... Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead… You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.'
Jesus’ Teachings on Obedience
Matthew 7:21 – 'Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father.'
Matthew 25:31–46 – The Sheep and the Goats: final judgment is portrayed based on acts of compassion and service.
Paul on Good Works as Fruit of Salvation
Romans 2:6–7 – 'He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.'
Ephesians 2:10 – Right after saying salvation is by grace, Paul adds: 'For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand.'
Holiness and Perseverance
Hebrews 12:14 – 'Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.'
Works/obedience are seen as the necessary demonstration of genuine faith.
Synthesis: Faith and Works Together
Faith is the root; works are the fruit.
Salvation is initiated by God’s grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9).
Works do not earn salvation but are the inevitable evidence of true saving faith (James 2:18, Matthew 7:16–20).
Paul and James are not contradictory: Paul addresses works of the law (ritual/merit-based), while James addresses works of love and obedience that prove faith is real.
